Description
A chawan is the wide, shallow bowl Japanese tea has been whisked in for centuries, and the shape is the reason it works. The flat floor lets a bamboo chasen sweep freely, while the height keeps foam from spilling over the rim.
This Deep Ocean bowl is made in Japan by a small family workshop. Each piece is shaped and glazed by hand in a dark, blue-toned finish with a single brush accent on the outside and a spiral turned into the base, so no two come out the same.
To use it: sift one to two scoops of matcha powder into the dry bowl, add a splash of hot water below boiling, whisk in a quick W motion until fine foam forms, then top up and drink from the bowl. It handles thin usucha and thicker koicha, and the width leaves room to build a matcha latte base, a smoothie or an afternoon cup at your desk.
Size: 4.75 in across, 3 in tall, 372 g. Sold as a single bowl. A whisk, scoop and sifter are not included, so keep your own chasen and sifter on hand, or start with them if you are moving up from whisking in a mug.
Care: rinse with hot water and dry with a soft cloth. The unglazed foot can absorb liquid, so avoid leaving the bowl standing in water and rest it on a coaster or mat on damp surfaces. Like all ceramic, it can chip if knocked against a hard sink or tap.
- Room to Whisk Properly: The 4.75-inch mouth and 3-inch depth give a bamboo chasen space to move through the powder, so you raise a frothy layer in the bowl itself instead of stirring in a mug and pouring it over.
- Hand-Glazed in Japan: A small family workshop shapes and glazes every chawan, so the blue-dark finish, the brush accent outside and the spiral turned into the base differ slightly from piece to piece rather than matching a photo exactly.
- Built for Daily Use: At 372 g the ceramic carries enough weight to stay put on the counter while you whisk quickly, and the glazed interior rinses clear under hot water, so it earns a spot by the kettle instead of the cupboard.
- Unglazed Foot, Firm Grip: The base is left bare in the traditional way, giving wet fingers something to hold while you wash up. Rest it on a coaster or cloth, since bare ceramic can take up a mark from a damp counter.
- More Than Matcha: The same bowl suits a smoothie, yogurt or dessert, and pairs with a chasen, sifter and scoop for a full tea corner. It ships on its own, which makes it a simple gift for a green tea drinker.
